The success of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network is undeniable and due to its massive use by millions of people from all over the world, it has gradually added dozens of functions that have made its smartphone application heavier by the day. That leads to an increase in battery and memory consumption, making it only feasible to be downloaded and run on powerful smartphones and tablets.
Therefore, if we’ve got a low-end phone we’ve only got two possibilities: use the web version, which isn’t optimized for these devices, or resort to an application that only comes along with the most basic functions of this social network. We’re obviously talking about Facebook Lite, with which the company wants to guarantee its expansion in those places in which it’s hard to have a high-end phone or where it’s almost impossible to access a 4G data network.
But, can it only be used on humble phones? No, if you’ve got the latest model of the Samsung Galaxy range or even a Nexus, you can also install its APK because you might want to save on your mobile data consumption or just because you don’t need all the functions offered in the full version.
What are the main differences?
Well, you’re only going to be able to carry out those actions that were initially conceived for this social network, in other words:
- Update your status and comment on your friends’ publications.
- Receive notifications about likes or comments.
- See what your friends are doing.
- Share different contents such as photos or links.
As you can see, rather basic functions so you’ll have to forget about broadcasting live video with Facebook Lite or any other feature that demands a huge bandwidth or high-performance hardware. Among its main features, we can point out:
- Weighs less than 1MB.
- Compatible with all Android phones.
- Lower data consumption.
- Compatible with 2G networks.
- Send messages without needing to download Facebook Messenger.
- Loads contents at higher speed.
A functional and sober design
Once you open the app, you’ll soon see that its interface is much soberer and just sticks to the most basic features of this social network. On the upper bar, it offers us access to the activities of users and pages you follow, to your friendship requests, messages, notifications, searches, and the user menu.
The most noteworthy feature is that if we use the full version of the social network on our phone, we won’t be able to send any messages as we’re forced to download the chat and instant messaging app, Messenger. However, here we’ll be able to send messages, although we’ll have to forget about video calls.
And no, there’s no such thing as a lite version for iPhone… we’ll only be able to download its APK for Android smartphones and tablets.
What’s new in the latest version?
